The brilliant opening lines of “Hamilton,” Lin Manuel-Miranda’s hit musical reimaging America’s framers with a cast as colorful as the nation, set me thinking about a Hamilton contemporary and made me wonder: How does a Brahmin, diplomat, son of a merchant and a blueblood dropped in the middle of a well-heeled corner of the American colonies, a Harvard man and vandal, become the namesake of a scandal spanning three centuries?
