Killing redistricting bill was shameful

February 10, 2017

Editor, Times-Dispatch:Our redistricting process badly needs reform. Politicians shouldn’t be able to draw voting maps and manipulate elections. More than 100 people turned out on Feb. 3 to support HJ763, a bipartisan bill to stop gerrymandering and make redistricting more fair.

Redistricting should be handled by an independent panel, not by the politicians themselves. Shame on Dels. Mark Cole (chair), Jackson Miller (vice chair) and the other members of the Privileges and Elections Committee for adjourning the meeting before HJ763 was heard, killing the bill. It was a cowardly, shady tactic that undermines democracy.

Gerrymandering robs Virginians — Republicans and Democrats alike — of true choice and representation.
