The solution to the gerrymandering is amending Virginia’s Constitution RIGHT NOW
The constitutional amendment must include the following pieces:
- CITIZEN MEMBERS MAKE UP AT LEAST HALF OF THE COMMISSION, WITH A CITIZEN AS CHAIR, AND CHECKS AND BALANCES TO ENSURE ONE PARTY DOESN’T DOMINATE OVER ANOTHER
- OPEN DATA + OPEN MEETINGS = GENUINE TRANSPARENCY
- CLEAR RULES THAT PROTECT OUR COMMUNITIES
- PROHIBIT MAP-DRAWING WITH THE INTENT OF FAVORING A PARTY OR INDIVIDUAL
TO APPLY REFORMS TO THE 2021 REDISTRICTING THAT WILL FOLLOW THE 2020 CENSUS, THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY MUST PASS AN AMENDMENT IN ITS 2019 AND 2020 SESSIONS, AND VOTERS MUST APPROVE IT IN NOVEMBER 2020.
We’ve worked through the legislative process and are ready for a compromise bill between the House and Senate plans for reform. Here’s a link to a PDF explaining the competing plans in more detail.
